The Universe of Music Theory: Unlocked

What is Music Theory?

Music theory is one of the most important topics any musician can study in order to reach their highest potential. Knowledge of theory helps you compose, perform, understand and appreciate music at a much deeper level. If you’re ready to join the world of music as a performer, collaborator, composer, song-writer, teacher, or even simply as a dilettante,  CeceliaReillyMusic can prepare you for 5 important concepts you should absolutely have in your toolbox before you embark on your next project.

1 - Form

It is important to understand the arrangement of a song.

At CeceliaReillyMusic, we guarantee (for each student) a solid understanding of form, and the vocabulary to compliment this understanding. We begin with A/B section, verse, chorus, and bridge . We go deeper into aspects of form such a repeats, 1st/2nd ending, coda, and so much more.

As a performing musician, you will be able to read and navigate any new piece you play with ease and confidence.

2 - Functional Harmony

At CeceliaReillyMusic, we understand that tonal music comes from a law of physics called the Harmonic Series.

We teach the foundation of functional harmonic relationships, and complimentary ear training to understand these relationships aurally.  Through our ear training program, you will be able   to play any piece in any key with this fundamental understanding of harmony.

3 - Consistent Rhythm/Steady Beat

At CeceliaReillyMusic, we understand that a steady beat is both the lifeblood and skeleton of music, as is the human heartbeat, and skeleton. A steady beat holds the piece together, and keeps the piece moving forward.

We help you develop techniques to both keep a steady beat, and also "play" with the beat. We help you find your own steady pulse,

We guarantee that you will develop a honed sense of rhythm and beat.

4 - Ear Training

Ear Training teaches the musician to discern intervals, harmonic progressions, and bass lines by ear. It is a crucial skill  for singers especially. I helps the ear "tune" the pitch. It is very instrumental in ensemble singing.

CeceliaReillyMusic has developed proven methods for teaching ear training, which can open new intuitive nuances to your performances.

5 - Reading and Literacy

Can you be a musician without learning to read music? Sure, it’s possible. Will you be an even better musician if you do learn how to read music? Yes, it’s absolute. CeceliaReillyMusic believes learning to read music will get you more performing gigs, let you learn a larger quantity of  music, and allow you to be more creative in all of your musical endeavors.
